eyes of the insane

Ok, to be upfront, for many years now I have obsessively avoided all news or mention of (let alone actually being subjected to watching) all the goddamned intermingled and meaningless popularity...er, I mean awards shows that seem so big on tv these days. However, something struck me this morning as I read briefly about the Dixie Chicks recent success and their winning of several grammy's, despite being roundly rejected by the so-called country establishment (and fans) for their anti-war and anti-Bush political stances a couple years ago. Well good for them I say.

But that isn't why I'm writing this entry. No, my reason is that the article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/11/AR2007021101680.html) also mentioned that the Dixie Chicks won "Album of the Year" and "Record of the Year," among other awards - I guess a rare accomplishment. But can someone help me - what the fuck is the difference between these awards? I can think of no discernable difference between an album and a record - can you?

As an aside, I also noticed that one of the best fucking metal bands ever, Slayer, actually won an award for their song about one of the U.S. soldiers who commited suicide just before having to deploy back to Iraq...these are strange times indeed my friends - perhaps this is the seventh sign of the coming of the apocalypse?! If so, then I need to drink and do more drugs (and it almost goes without saying, have more kinky sex with my soulmate!) before the end...

Yay!! Kinky sex rules!! :)

But to answer your first question, from the Grammy website (via AskYahoo and Wikipedia), the difference between "Record of the Year" and "Album of the Year" is as follows:

Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist and the producer, recording engineer, and/or mixer for that song.

Album of the Year is awarded for a whole album, and the award is presented to the artist, producer, and recording engineer for that album. So, in this context, "record" means one song and "album" means the whole collection of songs on a CD or LP.

But if "record" really means "song," what's the Song of the Year award for? The Grammy's frequently asked questions page has the answer. Record of the Year is given to the artist who performs the song and the people who produce the track. Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who dreamed up the song in the first place.

Long answer, I know, but at least it clears up the confusion!! :)

Love you!!

well, yes, that clears it right up!...which all goes back to my underlying point: ALL these fucking awards (and the primetime-aired ego trips surrounding them) are fucking pointless and idiotic!

ps: thanks for the clarifying info sweety!

ps: The Dixie Chicks won Song of the Year too!!! I'm starting to think the judges or voters or whatever for this fucking thing were as clueless as us and did exactly what I would have done had I been in their shoes: "Fuck this rot, I'll just select "A" for every category..."

I agree, all these award shows are just exercises in ego sizes. (Although I do have a soft spot for the Tony awards, just because of the performances!)

That's just silly that the Dixie Chicks won all those categories!!

to add to the fact that these awards shows are pointless - i used to be a member of the recording academy, and was able to nominate artists and vote on them for the grammy awards. ME! who the hell am I? these awards are just industry losers voting for themselves.

joshy xx

ps: SLAYER!!!!!!
